Curiosity – the desire to know.Merriam Webster
I went to college later than many people, receiving my Bachelor’s degree at age 30 and my master’s degree shortly thereafter. I’ll never forget the feeling of “the more I learn, the more I realize I don’t know.” Going back to school for me at that stage in life just reminded me of how much more there was to learn. I developed this insatiable curiosity about everything from what I was studying to how things worked. I remember one day my father-in-law asking, rather sarcastically, “Is that what they teach you in college, how to ask more questions?” For me, the answer was a vehement “YES!” And I’m glad it was. It’s curiosity that keeps us learning, growing, and developing. It keeps us open-minded and willing to see alternative viewpoints. And it keeps us from being so judgmental!
Side Note: Here’s something I’m curious about right now. Why does the word “curious” have a “u” but the word “curiosity” does not? If you know the answer, leave me a comment.
In the workplace and in life, people often believe they should have all the answers. I found the most effective employees and leaders were those that could ask the best questions.
Let’s review just a few of the benefits of curiosity.
Benefits of Curiosity
In order to fully embrace the benefits of curiosity, it is important to first understand what a growth mindset is. A growth mindset is a belief that intelligence and abilities can be developed and improved over time. It is the opposite of a fixed mindset, which believes that intelligence and abilities are set in stone and cannot be changed. When we have a growth mindset, we are more open to learning and growing, and we are less afraid of failure or making mistakes. Curiosity is closely linked to a growth mindset because it encourages us to seek out new knowledge and experiences. When we are curious, we are more willing to take risks, try new things, and explore new ideas. We are also more likely to see challenges as opportunities for growth and learning, rather than as roadblocks to success.
Curiosity is also essential for effective problem-solving. When faced with a problem, curious individuals are more likely to ask questions, gather information, and explore different solutions. They are not satisfied with the first answer or solution they come across, but instead, they continue to seek out new information and ideas. This allows them to approach problems from different angles and come up with creative solutions.
Furthermore, curiosity is crucial for effective communication with others. When we are curious about someone else’s perspective, we are more likely to listen actively and engage in meaningful dialogue. We ask questions, seek clarification, and try to understand the other person’s point of view. This not only improves communication but also helps to build empathy and rapport with others.
